Urbanization & Megacities
Humanity is becoming urban. 57% live in cities today vs 30% in 1950. By 2050, 68% will be urban. 33 megacities now house 10M+ people each.
Key Urbanization Insights
Megacities Quadrupled Since 1975
Megacities (10M+ people) grew from 8 (1975) to 33 (2025), projected to reach 37 by 2050. Over half (19) are in Asia. Jakarta (42M), Dhaka (40M), Tokyo (33M) lead. By 2050, Dhaka tops ranking at 54M.
Urban Majority Since 2007
2007 marked tipping point when urban population surpassed rural for first time in history. Urban share rose from 30% (1950) to 50% (2007) to 57% (2026). Rural population peaked 2021 at 3.5B, now declining.
Africa Urbanizing Fastest
Africa urbanizing rapidly from 43% (2025) to 60% (2050). Asia adding 1.2B urban dwellers 2025-2050. Africa adds 900M. Rural Africa peaks 2043. Urban infrastructure struggles to keep pace with growth.
Small Cities Multiplying
UN 2025 revision tracks 12,000+ cities (minimum 50K people, lowered from 300K). Most urban growth occurring in cities under 1M population. Secondary cities and towns absorb 2/3 of urban population increase through 2050.
Urban vs Rural Population (1950-2050)
Billions of people in urban and rural areas
Key Finding: Urban population surged from 0.8B (1950) to 4.7B (2026), heading to 6.7B (2050). Rural population peaked at 3.5B (2021), now declining to 3.2B by 2050. Crossover occurred 2007.
Urbanization Rate by Region (2025 vs 2050)
% of population living in urban areas
Key Finding: North America (83%), Latin America (81%), Europe (75%) already highly urban. Asia rises from 52% to 66%, Africa from 43% to 60% by 2050. Rural majorities disappearing globally.
Top 15 Megacities by Population (2025)
Urban agglomeration population in millions
Key Finding: Jakarta (42M) surpassed Dhaka and Tokyo as world's largest. 19 of top 33 megacities in Asia. Lagos (16M) fastest-growing, projected to reach 33M by 2050. Tokyo aging/shrinking, dropping from 1st to 7th by 2050.
Urban Population Growth by City Size (2025-2050)
Additional urban dwellers by settlement category
Key Finding: Cities under 1M add 1.1B people (56% of growth), cities 1-5M add 510M (26%), megacities 370M (18%). Small and medium cities dominate growth, challenging infrastructure planning.
Understanding Urbanization Data
What Counts as Urban?
UN 2025 revision uses Degree of Urbanization method: cities (50K+ people, high density), towns (5-50K or moderate density), rural areas. Previous minimum was 300K, now lowered to 50K, increasing cities tracked from ~1,900 to 12,000+.
Urban Agglomeration vs City Proper
City proper: Administrative boundaries only. Urban agglomeration: Contiguous built-up area including suburbs. Jakarta agglomeration (42M) vs Jakarta city proper (10M). UN uses agglomeration for megacity rankings.
Why Urbanization Matters
Economic: Cities generate 80% of global GDP. Environmental: Concentrated consumption, but also efficiency opportunities. Social: Access to services, jobs, education. Infrastructure: Water, sanitation, transport demands surge. Governance: Urban planning, slums, inequality challenges.
